Nitrous Oxide
Visiting the dentist for consultation may make a few people nervous. This is quite common in the case of children, as they may fear that the procedures would be painful. However, this isn’t true at all, as the dentist would take every measure to ensure you are comfortable, and the procedure is made pain-free. This is done using dental sedatives, such as nitrous oxide.
What is nitrous oxide?
Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative used during dental procedures to ease the patient’s nerves. If you feel too anxious or have a hard time being seated in the dental chair, the dentist may suggest nitrous oxide as a means of mild sedation. A comfortably fitting mask will be placed on the mouth and nose, through which nitrous oxide will be supplied in a predetermined quantity.
Once inhaled, the sedative starts to take effect gradually. Within a few minutes, you would begin to feel more relaxed and at ease. In fact, even the most regular things would start to appear funnier, which relaxes you further. Nitrous oxide doesn’t have any adverse effects, and would gradually wear off a short while later.
